Mulberry F/W16 Winsley

IMAGE: MULBERRY

I think sometimes I’m secretly obsessed with Johnny Coca’s Mulberry, because every other day you’ll find me stalking their online site to see if anything new came out. While part of me wants him to succeed (we all want to support the underdog, right?), the other part of me is just wondering if he is just going to import whatever he’s done at Céline wholesale to Mulberry because anything that looks like it’s from the former will sell anyway, right?

So far the report card is pretty even either way though, with theClifton looking like the Trio, while the Maple is, in my honest opinion, a Mulberry classic in the making. And today we’ve got the Winsley, which I’m still trying to put my finger on.

Measuring some 28 cm by 19 cm, the easiest (and laziest) way to describe it is just to simply call it a fat Trio, with 3 zip compartments placed back to back, the front and back compartments larger than the one in the middle. The sides also taper out as you get to the bottom (hence the fat name-calling bit), but you know what I mean.

Worn over the shoulder or across the body by way of its adjustable sling, it’s actually quite pretty and pretty functional as well, ‘safe’ enough for work without bordering on the OL bit. Priced atGBP995, it comes in Pebbled Lamb in Black (shown above), as well as in smooth calfskin in Black, Burgundy and Clay.

Buy online via Mulberry, and while you’re there, do check out the other bag I’m quite obsessed about, the F/W16 Buckle Satchel for mens. Quite the love.

MULBERRY BAYSWATER TOTES IN CANDY COLORS

Categories:Other Brands

Mulberry-Bays-Water-Green-Soft-Grain

The Mulberry Alexa Satchel bag might crumble, but the iconic Bayswater remain strong and thriving. Up until today, the Mulberry Bayswater is still crafted at Somerset – one stitch at a time and proudly printed with: ‘Made in United Kingdom’.

Without hesitation, the classic colors are oak-brown and chocolate-black, but because fashion is all about ‘thinking outside the box’ and is at its best when ‘moved away from the comfort zone’, we present you the Mulberry Bayswater bag in the newest candy colors.

I mean, its summah right? And because of that, black is forbidden and craziness is allowed. Add some colours into your life, brighten up your style with a little help of Mulberry.

Put together with exceptional level of leather quality, the Bayswater proudly features the signature postman’s lock closure and the interior belted side can be adjusted to create more space if needed.

With shining elements, which color suits you better? Green in soft grain, Red in soft grain or the Blue in shiny Goat skin.

Measuring 26.5 x 36 x 16.5 cm (H x W x D).

Mulberry’s Business Woes Persist Despite Cheaper Bags, Cara Delevingne

Categories:Other Brands

Despite debuting a line of more accessible bags to win back old customers and signing on Cara Delevingneto do a high-profile capsule collection and campaign, Mulberry’s fortunes still haven’t turned around. Earlier this week, the company issued a profit warning to shareholders after a 17% decline in sales in the first half of 2014, according to Women’s Wear Daily. Be careful of anyone who wants to attribute that to global strife or changing travel patterns, though; Mulberry’s only got itself to blame.

In yesterday’s New York Times, Vanessa Friedman enumerated the issues at Mulberry that we’ve been talking about here for a while. Despite the departure of disastrous CEO Bruno Guillon, who came to the brand from Hermès and, in his short tenure, jacked up all its prices and alienated popular creative director Emma Hill to the point of resignation, not much has changed. The company has yet to name a new permanent CEO or creative director, although they do have Cara Delevingne on their payroll.

The problem with having Delevingne, though, is that so does everyone else, from DKNY to Burberry toChanel. Although her line and campaign with the brand have received a moderate amount of press attention, reporters on the Delevingne beat are spread pretty thin; without ponying up money for an exclusive, her mere presence has limited value to a brand that’s trying to distinguish itself. Mulberry has a history of betting on the wrong celebrities in the wrong ways, though; remember Lana Del Rey’s bag?

There’s no short of beautiful, rich, young, British it girls-in-the-making for Mulberry to choose, but without a permanent CEO and a new creative director to guide the brand in a purposeful direction, expect to see Mulberry spinning its wheels for some time, no matter the state of the global luxury market.

CARA DELEVINGNE FOR MULBERRY HANDBAG SHOOT

Categories:Other Brands

Cara-Delevingne-for Mulberry-Handbag-Ad-Campaign-2014-4

What’s so hot about the Cara Delevigne Bag Collection?

Well, we have seen Mulberry doing collaborations before like the newest Tessa Collection, which is priced lower than their classic bags. Then we have observed how Mulberry chew their iconic bags and then turned them into shoulder bags or Bayswater double totes. But what I love the most about the Cara Delevigne Collection is the newest back packs which are quilted.

Ever since around Chanel introduced their graffiti backpack line, we’ve seen how trendy they become. And the choices are increasing, Prada just released their ‘soft backpacks’ and Balenciaga their very own ‘Le Dix Backpack’. Cara’s version is just a bit different, elegant, mixing with the elements of Mulberry.

And if you love quilted bags (you will know this by checking your previous purchases), and in combination with, that you are actively seeking for a backpack to match your casual outfit, then this should be added to your list as ‘to be considered’. It’s well worth it.

This is the second ad campaign that Cara shoots for Mulberry, it gives a good idea of how to combine her bags with chic dresses and pumps.

The Cara Delevigne Collection will be launched in September, the price will be between £895 and £2,500.

Mulberry Alexa: The End Of An Era?

Categories:Other Brands

IMAGE: MULBERRY

If the chatter on the internet is to be believed (and coupled with the fact that if you check out Mulberry’s online site you’ll only see 3 bags left), the days of the Alexa are numbered. Once the most sought-after of all bags ever made by the British accessories house during the tenure of then Creative Director Emma Hill, it was all I ever blogged about back in 2009 when it first came out, and it was all you guys ever asked about.

There was the Alexa in soft buffalo leather, which was then followed by variations in metallic leathers, tweed-embossed leather and even one which came in leopard prints. They made it big, they made it small, they made so many versions of it but nothing beat the original one in Oak leather that was priced at just GBP750 way, way, way back then.

Along the way, the IT bag became irrelevant, mainly because prices literally skyrocketed overnight after Mulberry decided that it had to aspire to be a luxurious leather house with equally eye-watering prices to match, and things took a turn for the worse, with Emma Hill’s departure happening soon after.

Today, under the tenure of current Creative Director Johnny Coca, it would make sense to discontinue the bag altogether since it a) wasn’t his creation to begin with and more likely, b) to align with his new vision for the brand. And it’s telling that the bag’s run will end soon, especially when a quick check online reveals only 3 styles left. Only the originals in Oak and Black are left and priced at GBP1100 each, with a third in woven raffia leather going for GBP1250. Nothing else is left, no mini bags, no oversized pieces, no wallets, nada, zilch, finito.

Which begs the question. While it is understandable for Mr Coca to do as he pleases since he is the one who will set the new creative direction, could it be a case of too fast, too soon? Or are you happy that it’s going to go on to bag heaven aka the deepest nether regions of your bag cupboard where all the discontinued/forgotten bags go to live out the rest of their lives? And if you have always wanted one but haven’t gotten around to buying one, would you do it now?
